Carers Time Off

Carers Time Off is a carer relief service covering Harrogate,  Knaresborough and the surrounding villages.  The service arranges for volunteer sitters to spend time in the home of an adult being cared for by a friend or relative to enable their carer to have some time to themselves. Referrals are taken from carers, relatives or friends and workers in health, social care services and other voluntary organisations.

Following referral the Co-ordinator will contact the Carer and arrange a visit to assess their needs. A volunteer will then be placed as soon as possible and will be closely ˜matched" with the family taking into account the needs and expectations of all involved. Volunteers usually sit with someone for between 2-4 hours on a regular or occasional basis either during the day or evening and weekends where possible.  Carers may use this break to perhaps meet with friends, pursue a hobby, go shopping or for a walk etc or to catch up on sleep.

A Holiday Cover service may also be provided with daily contact being made, either by visit or a telephone call, to the dependent person usually by the Co-ordinator and/or a volunteer.

The volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and from a wide age range. Some have worked in the caring profession, while others have had personal experience of caring for a friend or relative.  References are taken for all volunteers who are also vetted by the Criminal Records Bureau.  Volunteer training and support is also provided.

There is no charge for the service although donations are welcome and are used to fund the volunteer out of pocket expenses.
