Learning and Training

Learning and Training

Harrogate CVS arranges training for workers and volunteers mainly through the activities of the Forums/Interest Groups and the Volunteer Centre.  If there is sufficient interest we will also arrange training in partnership with other providers at a small cost or nominal fee.   The CVS Projects arrange independent and shared training for their volunteers and may offer this to volunteers in other voluntary organisations and community groups if there is the capacity to do so.

Harrogate CVS receives on-going information about learning opportunities from many networks and circulates this information to the Harrogate Voluntary and Community Sector via our electronic mailing lists and in our bi-monthly newsletter, Care in Action, and our Monthly Calendar.  There is also a list of websites which will signpost you to courses elsewhere in the Harrogate District  and other web-based online learning resources you may find useful.

Below we signpost you to training and learning opportunities that will interest workers and volunteers in voluntary organisations and community groups in Harrogate District.

Could you be a Mental Health First-Aider?

Wellspring is continuing to run a pioneering new 'first aid' initiative, which is part of a new national training programme developed and regulated by the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) and England's Care Services Improvement Partnerships (CSIP). The MHFA Project is aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing in the community and workplace and has a real impact on people's lives.

Mental Health First Aid helps people gain a better understanding of mental health, reduces stigma, and promotes recovery. This is achieved via a 12- hour training course, which can be run over two days or 4 evenings.

The course does not teach people how to become qualified health professionals, but follows the basic principles of First Aid training, where initial help is given to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained. MHFA enables you to learn 5 basic steps that can be used confidently to help a person developing a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety or psychosis, or experiencing suicidal thoughts or risky behaviour.

We are often reluctant to offer help and support to friends, family and colleagues as we lack confidence and are afraid of doing harm, and feedback from the course clearly shows that it improves confidence and reduces fear.

Wellspring are now running an autumn programme of courses in North Yorkshire, and due to an "Awards for All" grant can run a number of free courses for the voluntary sector, with a minimal contribution for the manual. Refreshments are provided and certification on completion of the course.

Dates of free evening courses:

September 17th/24th    October1st /2nd;

November 5th/19th/26th and December 3rd.

Time: 6.30-9.30pm

Venue: Harrogate Fire Station

There is also a 2 day course open to anyone on October 22nd and 29th.

In-house training for private businesses and public sector groups and organisations is also offered, at the subsidised rate of £75 per person.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is an internationally-recognised training programme which has just been launched in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region. It is run by Leeds-based mental health charity Community Links and subsidised by the Big Lottery Fund.

MHFA helps people understand different mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and psychosis, and teaches people how to respond to someone who is experiencing mental ill-health. By educating people about mental ill-health some of the stigma and discrimination that surrounds this issue can be reduced. Having a Mental Health First Aider in your organisation would mean that anyone who needs help is guided towards it quicker. Participants learn a five point action plan which they can use when faced with a person experiencing a mental health problem.

MHFA is a two day nationally recognised training course, aimed at all sections of the public including commercial sector workers, voluntary and public sectors, students and communities. The subsidised price is £80 per person for the entire course.

Bookings are accepted from individuals or groups throughout Yorkshire and the Humber; however groups are asked to provide a venue in their area. The course fee includes lunch, refreshments and full course materials.

To book a place, or to find out more, please contact the MHFA team on 0845 8389928.

Safeguarding in Youth Participation is a one-day course that supports organisations in developing and applying safe policies and procedures when working with young people. The course gives participants an understanding of their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the safety of children and young people. It also addresses key signs to look for if a young person is being harmed within a project or externally. This entails an exploration of risk assessment and how to plan safe activities to reduce the risk of  children and young people coming to harm. The key elements of a child protection and safeguarding policy and procedure will be introduced, providing participants with the basic knowledge and understanding to write their own bespoke policy and procedures.
