Learning and Training

Learning and Training

Harrogate CVS arranges training for workers and volunteers mainly through the activities of the Forums/Interest Groups and the Volunteer Centre.  If there is sufficient interest we will also arrange training in partnership with other providers at a small cost or nominal fee.   The CVS Projects arrange independent and shared training for their volunteers and may offer this to volunteers in other voluntary organisations and community groups if there is the capacity to do so.

Harrogate CVS receives on-going information about learning opportunities from many networks and circulates this information to the Harrogate Voluntary and Community Sector via our electronic mailing lists and in our bi-monthly newsletter, Care in Action, and our Monthly Calendar.  There is also a list of websites which will signpost you to courses elsewhere in the Harrogate District  and other web-based online learning resources you may find useful.

Organisations large and small that provide learning opportunities in York and North Yorkshire can now obtain valuable information, representation, development and funding from the new North Yorkshire Learning Consortium (NYLC).
NYLC is a not for profit organisation formed by the voluntary and community sector, for the voluntary and community sector, to ensure all voluntary and community organisations can provide and develop high quality services in the learning and skills environment.
For more information on NYLC’s activity or to join as an affiliate member please call 01423 799100 or email Sue Vasey at svasey@nylc.co.uk or visit the website http://www.nylc.co.uk/

Below we signpost you to training and learning opportunities that will interest workers and volunteers in voluntary organisations and community groups in Harrogate District.

Are you looking to increase children and young people participation in your organisation? Then the Participation Works consortium has a range of training courses and a consultancy package, ranging from introducing a selection of training methods and tools, through to organisational change and strategic planning to support you.

Courses are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of staff including managers and trustees as well as young people themselves, and will include accredited training. The training programme is being delivered England-wide by a team of Participation Works approved trainers, including young people who are aged 16-19 years.

Courses are FREE to Voluntary, Community and other Third Sector organisations (1 person per organisation) and £85 for Statutory organisations.

Building a Culture of Participation explores how an organisation’s culture can be established and embedded to support children and young people’s active and meaningful participation within the organisational infrastructure.

Safeguarding in Youth Participation is a one-day course that supports organisations in developing and applying safe policies and procedures when working with young people. The course gives participants an understanding of their roles and responsibilities in ensuring the safety of children and young people. It also addresses key signs to look for if a young person is being harmed within a project or externally. This entails an exploration of risk assessment and how to plan safe activities to reduce the risk of  children and young people coming to harm. The key elements of a child protection and safeguarding policy and procedure will be introduced, providing participants with the basic knowledge and understanding to write their own bespoke policy and procedures.

Hear by Right helps you map and plan the participation of children and young people within the organisation. The Hear by Right workshops are designed to raise awareness about participation and show you how to use the Participation Works Hear by Right Self-Assessment Tool.

Hear by Right, Your Questions Answered  will provide you with an opportunity to focus further on the Hear by Right standards and help you identify, prioritise and develop the areas that are key for your organisation. The group is aimed at colleagues who have a working knowledge of Hear by Right rather than those who are completely new to the standards.

Ready Steady Change is a one-day course that introduces participants to a selection of training methods and tools to enhance their skills and knowledge in increasing children and young people’s effective participation in decision-making. The course focuses on values, change and action. Ready Steady Change approaches participation from a children’s rights framework and is suitable for all individuals involved in participation work.

The seminar is designed specifically for participants from voluntary, community and third sector organisations to learn more about the Saying Power resources.
