Opening Doors for Disabled People

Opening Doors for Disabled People is a voluntary organisation which operates within a 5 mile radius of Harrogate and aims to promote maximum independence for people with a sensory impairment or physical disability. We do this by enabling individuals to get out and about and enjoy social and leisure activities with the assistance of a volunteer. The volunteer accompanies the service user on a one to one basis whenever and wherever the client wishes to go and outings usually last betweem two and three hours. Outings can include visits to gardens, markets, theatre, shopping, garden centres etc.  We also provide a short-term service to support people newly discharged from hospital to help regain their confidence. We are funded by North Yorkshire County Council Social Services.

The scheme currently supports over 70 clients with the help of 26 very active and supportive volunteers and demand for the service is huge with an increasing number of referrals.  Around 500 outings are arranged each year.

We also have two major parties per year when clients, volunteers and guests get together.

We value highly the work of our volunteers and support them with many training courses and social events.

If you are interested in our services, or if you can spare 2-3 hours per month at times that suit you as a volunteer, please contact Rachel MacKenzie, Co-ordinator on;
