What is the Practice Learning Development Project?

 

Its purpose is to generate and support local (Harrogate & District) voluntary sector practice learning opportunities for social work students.

The Practice Learning Development Project is managed by Harrogate & Area Council for Voluntary Service and works closely with Skills for Care (its funders) and members of the Harrogate Practice Learning Forum and the York and North Yorkshire Practice Learning Consortium, including Higher Education institutions and Local Authorities.

Why is there an increased need for practice learning opportunities?

As part of their professional training social work students have to complete a minimum of 200 days in practice settings. This is divided into at least two blocks of equal or differing length. 

Studying for a degree in social work is becoming an increasingly popular choice both for young people and for those changing career or returning to education. There is a need to develop more high quality practice learning opportunities and to look beyond traditional social work settings for placements.  Social work and social care takes place in an increasingly wide variety of settings, so voluntary sector placements have an enormous contribution to make.

What could a social work student bring to your organisation?

  • Fresh ideas and new perspectives from an enthusiastic, committed student
  • An additional staff member is a learning role
  • The opportunity to contribute to social work education and a generation of social workers who are more aware of work in the voluntary sector
  • A daily fee of £28 (current rate).  If no-one in your organisation is qualified to act as a Practice Teacher/Assessor, a 'Long Arm' Practice Teacher can be arranged and the fee is then shared between your organisation and the 'Long Arm' Practice Teacher.  The University or the Practice Learning Development Project can advise on this process
  • The opportunity to develop professionally as a Practice Teacher or Workplace Assessor
  • A potential source of new, qualifed employees
